Donald Trump vs. Greta Thunberg: The Twitter War and the sheer Irony of Melania Trump’s Advocacy Against Bullying

Greta Thunberg is a 16 year old activist on the issue of climate change and global warming. Donald Trump is 73 years old and is the President of The United States of America. Never did society think that these two characters, living in entirely different worlds and born in different generations, would go head to head in a battle of wits.

Thunberg won Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2019 for raising awareness about global warming. This highly troubled Trump believed he should’ve won, so he tweeted about her win, “Greta must work on her anger management problem, then go to watch a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill, Greta, chill!”

This was a new low for Trump, who had already engaged in this kind of petty argument before with notable celebrities such as Hillary Clinton. Not only was his attack on Thunberg out of the blue, but Thunberg is a 16 year old and Trump is 73. The age difference is a whopping 57 years. Why would he do this? It just adds to the list of outrageous things he has said about other people.

The most ironic part is that Melania Trump, Donald Trump’s wife, defended her son Barron Trump after Professor Pamela Karlan, a graduate of Stanford Law School, made fun of him in a joke. Melania tweeted in response that “A minor deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics. Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased pandering, and using a child to do it.”

However, when asked about what she thought about Greta Thunberg getting bullied, she responded, “Greta Thunberg, who travels the globe giving speeches, isn’t the same as my son, a 13 year old who wants and deserves privacy.”

Hearing about this statement, I realized that Trump was right about her son deserving privacy, unlike Thunberg, who puts herself in the open more. However, this statement still does not justify her husband’s childlike behavior, and he should not have handled this situation the way he did.

Students attending Oakdale High School spoke out about this feud as well. Rhian Evans, a freshman at Oakdale High School, commented, “I think it’s really stupid because Donald Trump is a 70 year-old man and the president of a nation. He has bigger things to he should be dealing with rather than a 16 year-old girl.”

Realizing the irony of Melania Trump being silent about her husband bullying Thunberg, Evans also noted, “…she’s just trying to save face.”

This twitter feud shows just how below-the-belt Trump can be at times. He should not always retaliate to everything, especially something that does not  even concern him.
