The 2023-2024 school year has just begun and high school seniors are starting their college searching process.
There is a lot to take into consideration when finally deciding to commit to a college for a sport. Senior Sierra Snow committed to Duquesne University in July to swim at a Division 1 level. Snow states, “I committed to Duquesne because of the opportunity to swim in college while studying something I’m passionate about.” She was very grateful for the chance she was given to swim at such a competitive level.
Many high school students participate in extracurricular activities while being a full time student. They have to figure out whether or not they want to continue their athletic career in college. Paige Overeem committed to Bridgewater College in March to play Division 3 lacrosse. She explains, “I had to decide if I wanted to play lacrosse or not and then I figured out what I really wanted to major in. I thought that finding a school that had my major was more important than what division the school was because I won’t be playing lacrosse my whole life.” She wanted to pick a school where she could study what she wanted to, while also playing the sport she loves.
Football star Hunter Thompson’s process was a little different. Thomspon shares, “Luckily for me I didn’t have to search for colleges; it was kinda the opposite.” Rather than reaching out and setting calls up himself, coaches spotted him and reached out first. The football coach from Division 1, Ohio University found Thompson and helped him through his college process.
High school seniors have been doing a lot of the process on their own. However many have their parents and coaches to thank for their help and support. Grayson Raiford committed to Roanoke College in June to play Division 3 field hockey. “My parents were a big part of the process because they helped me choose my school. They also took me on many college tours, to my practices, and tournaments multiple times,” Raiford expresses.
Each senior was asked what they are most looking forward to in college. They all shared how excited they are to play with new teammates and make new friendships among their sports. Snow voices, “I’m looking forward to being surrounded by girls that are dedicated to the same sport I am.”
The love each student has shown their sport has helped them achieve their goal of getting them to where they are today. They’ve stayed motivated and pushed themselves to do their best. The seniors are thrilled to make a difference on their future teams and continue doing the sports they’re passionate about.
