Oakdale 2018-2019 Wrestling Season
January 25, 2019
Oakdale Wrestling is a program that has had much success over the years has had it’s ups and downs this year.
The program has won its fair share of matches this year but due to forfeits the team sadly lost to its biggest rival and last year’s state champions Urbana on the 19th of January.
Oakdale Wrestling has a very unique tradition when the team beats Urbana that unfortunately won’t take place this year. Over the years when the has defeated Urbana the whole team has bleached their hair blonde.
“The opinion differs for everyone, some people enjoy dying their hair and others don’t. However, usually everyone participates in bleaching their hair regardless if they don’t want to,” states Junior Patrick Thomas answering the question if his team enjoys dying their hair blonde or if it was something the team felt like they had to do to keep the tradition alive.
The team has three matchups remaining on the season, two of them being tournaments. The regular matchup is against Middletown at Middletown High.
Junior Landon Rotter didn’t hesitate with his answer, “Middletown is a huge challenge, they are a very skilled team that has given us a great challenge every year. We can defeat them but it will require hard work.” This was Landon Rotters response to being asked how he felt about the teams last remaining regular matchup on their schedule.
Last night the wrestling team had their senior night against Brunswick, the team came away with a win. Seniors Liam Popkin, Ramy Freeman, Michael Gula, Joe Thomas, and Zac Leskoski all came away with wins. Senior Wyatt Mccoy won by Forfeit.
The two remaining tournaments will take place at Overlea High and Walkerville High.
The Tournament at Walkerville will feature FCPS teams only and will be the last tournament on the teams season schedule.
The Oakdale wrestling team has had an up and down ride this season and will look to end their season strong.
