On April 10, Prime Video released a new series, Fallout, created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The show is based on the popular video game series from Interplay Entertainment, continuing their story. Fallout takes place in a post apocalyptic world caused by nuclear war with a 1960’s aesthetic. In the program, there are many different groups of survivors, some remained above ground and some went below into shelters called vaults. It has been 200 years since the bombs dropped and the characters’ lives are changing.
The story is told from the perspective of three different characters: Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), a vault dweller whose ancestors have lived in the shelter for the past 200 years; Maximus (Aaron Moten), a member of a powerful faction; and Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins), also known as the Ghoul, a mutant human from before the war.
“The characters introduced are really cool, they are showing many of the aspects from the game and introducing the factions, they are doing a really good job developing the moral compass of each character and showing how they adjust to new experiences [and] lives,” junior Jack Doughty shares.
The show follows nine games, meaning there is a lot of lore to make up for. The show helps inform audience members who are new to the Fallout universe. “It does a good job [filling in the viewer,] especially with the different perspectives of each of the groups,” junior Sri Malkireddy elaborates. He describes how the points of view of the different characters are very helpful to understand how the world of Fallout came to be.
“The storylines are great, they show the many problems faced in the wasteland and how difficult it is to live there, it demonstrates a good understanding of the morality in the wasteland and introduces it well,” Doughty adds.
Fallout fans find it important that the show keeps the same vibe as the games. Concerns have been raised that the show will stray too far from the original. Doughty claims the show includes many aspects of the games and holds true to what a Fallout show should be.
Former fans of the games, and fans new to the world of Fallout, both believe the show is worth viewing. “I think the show is a great watch and I do recommend watching it because it’s got a good story and great action,” Doughty describes. Malkireddy believes the show is easy to get into and says the plot is compelling and entertaining.
A second season is confirmed and many fans are looking forward to more episodes. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, building up to a release of season 2. Fans are excited to see where the series will go and what is going to happen next.
