Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings is one of the best Marvel Movies ever made.

Nathan Hadley, Senior Editor-in-Chief

The movie Shang-Chi was released on September 3, 2021.Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings is the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is the first stand-alone film in the MCU to feature an Asian-American superhero.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Shang-Chi” takes place in Macau, China. It’s dynamic cast features stars such as Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang and Fala Chen.

Shang-Chi reveals to be a key piece to a broken family that has a history of infighting. The dysfunctional family dynamics are even more important than the ten rings that grant such immense power to Shang Chi’s power-hungry father, Wenwu, who has lived for 1,000 years and created a society called the Ten Rings. The Ten Rings has destroyed kingdoms and  adjusted events all over the world. Eventually, Wenwu found love with Jiang Li (Fala Chen), and there was peace. They married and started a family. But after Shang-Chi’s mother died, a newly monstrous Wenwu tried to mature his son by making him a killer, causing the young boy to leave behind his sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) and Wenwu.

Why people say this one of the best Marvel movies is because of the ratings. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” on Rotten Tomatoes has a  rating of 92% with 308 reviews. The Audience score was 98% with over 10,000+ Verified Ratings.

When asking my questions with my family members, according to my Aunt Kelly Aulls, she thinks that’s “Because it has one of every attribute that it needs to be a number one movie.”

Shang-Chi is part of the Disney-owned comic book-based franchise,  because of how little it relies on connection to the wider MCU. Even when Marvel previously introduced new characters to the big screen, like Black Panther, Ant-Man or the MCU version of Spider-Man, they tend to overlap with other films.

The Marvel Studios and Disney Pictures  achieved a major milestone on Friday when grossing $186.8 million in domestic ticket sales, the highest gross of the pandemic-era despite the challenges posed by the delta variant. The record previously belonged to fellow Marvel title Black Widow, which topped out at $183.4 million in North America.

Shang-Chi smashed the record for Labor Day openings with a four-day haul of $94.7 million. For the three days, it earned $75.4 million, a huge number for September and the second-biggest start of 2021 behind Black Widow ($80.3 million).

With all of the numbers from Shang-Chi and Black Widow, Shang-Chi has better rating according to Rotten Tomatoes,  as well as how much money they made making it a number one contender for the year.

According to Hunter Aulls, an 8th grader at Tuscarora Middle School, “ This movie has so many good action scenes, and also has a really good back story.”

People that love Marvel movies and love the MCU should go see Shang-Chi, because it is an amazing movie with intense action scenes and dialogue that makes it a good story.
