Pokemon: Scarlet and Violet are the newest games chronologically, but they have been around for a year. On December 14, part 2 of the Downloadable Content (DLC) Package for Scarlet and Violet was released. With that in mind, it is time to review what the DLC holds.
Part 1 of the DLC came out on September 13th. It is centered around the new land of Kitakami. There, you meet siblings Carmine and Kieran, as well as some old Pokemon friends. Part 1 also introduced new Legendary Pokemon: the “Loyal” Three, consisting of Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti, and the masked Ogerpon, which has a special Terastallized form for each mask it wears.
Part 2 is largely centered around the Generation 5 Unova region. Specifically, a new school that the player will be attending as a foreign exchange student. This school is called Blueberry Academy, and it has a rich culture. It features an underwater terrarium with four biomes, each with its own Pokemon.
Among these Pokemon are the most famous ones: starter Pokemon.
In this DLC, starter Pokemon will be able to be found in the wild, a previously unheard-of notion (aside from Pikachu and Eevee, which are starter Pokemon in the Let’s Go! games.) With the exception of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the player receives one of three starter Pokemon at the beginning of the game and is unable to catch the other two in the wild. While it is unknown if the Generation 9 starter Pokemon will be found in the wild here, the poster Pokemon (Koraidon and Miraidon) may receive a new ability.
In the trailer for the DLC, Koraidon and Miraidon are shown flying through rings. Based on this, it appears that the Legendary Pokemon will gain the ability to fly. Another new feature is the ability to become a Pokemon.
Players don’t transform into Pokemon, but they will be able to see through their partner Pokemon’s eyes and move as they do. This feature is basically Pokemon possession.
There are many more new features that will be released in Part 2 of the DLC, which is called The Indigo Disk. Part 1 was called The Teal Mask. Pokemon Club member Brennan Hocherl laments, “I have yet to unlock [The Indigo Disk]. I have to beat Teal Mask first. I am waiting for new Pokemon to come out, I’m excited about that.”
Part 2’s title refers to the new, mysterious Legendary Pokemon, Terapagos.
As the Pokemon’s name implies, it is connected to the Terastal phenomenon. When Pokemon Terastallize, their body crystallizes, they gain a Tera Jewel on their head that corresponds to their Tera Type, which also becomes their normal type, and moves of the Pokemon’s Tera Type become more powerful.
Physically, Terapagos looks like a blue crystal turtle. This Pokemon is a Normal type, but it is unknown, as is how players encounter it or what its moves will be. Its connection to the Terastal phenomenon is unknown, but it is highly implied that it will have a special Terastal form, like Ogerpon does.
The full DLC is called The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. Area Zero, also known as the Great Crater of Paldea, is at the center of the Paldea region. In the DLC, players may discover how the Terastal phenomenon came to be, perhaps with the help of Terapagos.
Aside from the mystery, players will explore their new school, become one with their Pokemon, and soar on their Pokemon’s wings. Even those who know very little about the DLC, are excited for the new Pokemon and other features. Junior Quinn River Banister described that he plays the games for the story. “The first half of the DLC had a very good story, so I’m excited to play through it myself.”
Pokemon: Scarlet and Violet are the first truly open-world games in the franchise. It’s time for more doors to open.
