As the winter season kicks off, the varsity girl’s basketball team is hopeful for another dominant season. After winning their season opener against Winters Mill 44-22 and beating TJ 53-36, they want to continue their success against even tougher teams.

“Urbana’s going to be our toughest game this year,” sophomore Brynn Ohlhoff explained. “We’ve been practicing six days a week to prepare.”

It’s challenging to play with a new team, especially one with five freshmen and only one senior, but the Bears have pushed past that. “Team bonding and building team chemistry is my favorite part about being on the team,” added Junior McKenna Witt.

All ten players that dress have been contributing to the team during games as well as practice, and everyone scored in the game against Winters Mill.

Even with two big wins in the books, the girls have to bounce back from close games against Catoctin and Linganore as they go into another hard game against Urbana to meet their team goals. “We want to win most of our games and improve our skills,” Witt continued.

Senior Captain Samantha Blaylock, and Junior captains McKenna Witt, Mikayla Carey, and Taylor Berger have stepped up this season and are leading the team on and off the court.

No matter the practice or the result of the game, they’re constantly pushing the team to work hard, which is why they’ve already improved and grown as a team and we can expect that to continue throughout the season.

Along with Blaylock, Witt, Carey, and Berger, other top players include Ohlhoff, Sophomore Madison Chorney, and Freshman Emma Carey.

Sophomores Skai Bayless and Alexis Rowe are both out for the season with ACL injuries.

The girls can’t wait to get back on the court after their short season last year because of COVID-19, and their excitement shows when they play. “I’m really looking forward to playoffs and more games,” exclaimed Ohlhoff.

Let’s come out and support our Bears on Tuesday, January 4th at Walkersville High School. JV plays at 5:30 and Varsity at 7!
