The Biolympiad Club Starts Up at Oakdale
October 6, 2022
The new “Biolympiad Club,” formed by student Arya Paghdal, helps expand student’s education on medical and biotechnology research to further their science skills. This new club is involving students in Biotechnology research to help students who have a passion in the field of medicine and science.
The Biolympiad club has been studying the anatomy of humans and other life to understand how we can affect the world around us. They will be learning and creating biotechnology to gain involvement from students interested in medicine and biology. Science teacher Ms. Jennifer Morgenthaler is the advisor of the club with her 29 members involved in this club.
With a club with such of a diverse and challenging program involving science, Paghdal expressed, “Making sure that all of them are engaged is really important to me” when asked about what challenges the club might face.
She continued, “I’m sure that will be a challenge but we’ll overcome it” with so much motivation for the club and interest in science the club is hoping for members who have an interest in science and medicine.
Boiolympiad, as a national organization, usually is an exam which consists of many topics such as Evolution, Animal Anatomy, and Cell Biology. The exam will take a few months. Winners of the exam portion of the competition get a chance to win a trip to Abu Dhabi. “This year we are focusing on interest. Next year we [at Oakdale] will go into the exam part of it,” explained Paghdal.
“I just happened to have an idea of how I’ve seen other students and other clubs in schools do things related to medicine; however, I never saw anything like this, so I wanted to continue my interest in biology,” Paghdal expressed, extending this opportunity to the whole school and creating a club for this interest will be able to “have an environment where students can focus on biology” and learn and create something from their passion.
