As many people recognize, Bob Marley is claimed as the most famous world ambassador for reggae music. But many don’t realize that he has passed down his gift for music to his children and grandchildren. Marley’s grandson YG Marley has released his first song, ‘Praise Jah In The Moonlight.’
Joshua Marley, also known as YG Marley, is the grandson of the famous Bob Marley, The son of Jamaican entrepreneur Rohan Marley and American rapper and songwriter Lauryn Hill.
The song was first released on December 27th and has quickly become one of the most listened to songs of 2024 with the help of TikTok which is known to promote songs for peoples careers with new trends for creators.
It has charted on Billboard Hot 100 at No. 74 with 6.2 million official U.S. streams, as the song continues to gain more streams by the week. Marley’s single became the first reggae song to hit the Hot 100 billboard in seven years. With this, he has become the sixth member in the Marley heritage to accomplish this goal.
“I believe that TikTok did a great job of promoting his music as it quickly became one of the most used sounds for a while,” junior Adiel Hernandez expresses his feelings about TikTok Branding.
Even with his song expanding to the world, it blew up right around the same time that the movie ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ released on February 14th. Kingsley Ben-Adir took on the role of Bob Marley and apparently wasn’t that good considering the movie received a rating of 40% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“I hear Bob Marley all through the song and his voice. They sound very similar and have the same type of music. It is like listening to Bob Marley then listening to praise jah and It’s like I never switched songs they are very relatable,” junior Alec Facemire opinion comparing the two Marleys.
“I think people liked his first song so much because it reminded them of Bob Marley and that is what it did for me and they can now listen to music that is just like Bob Marley’s.” Facemire shares.
Overall, the song has become a quick hit and there is no denying that his future in music could be greater than the life his grandfather has left behind.
