A memorable and formative experience for many students during their time in high school is having an after school job. However, finding, applying and interviewing for these jobs can often feel daunting for students going through the process for the first time.
Social media is often overlooked when trying to find a business that is hiring. Another good place to look is the websites of places like the YMCA or county Parks and Recreation departments, which can yield opportunities to work as an after school program assistant or summer camp counselor.
Interviewing for jobs themselves may also be daunting. “Never arrive late to an interview…It gives the impression that you are unreliable. Also, [dress] appropriately for an interview,” Michelle Printz, Oakdale High School’s career counselor, advised.
This depends on the job you’re interviewing for, but generally means a nice, clean shirt and pants- no sweatpants or cropped tops. Arriving early, or at least on time, is important because it shows potential employers that you value their time, and can be relied on.
Printz is a great resource for students, whether their questions are about post-high-school careers or jobs to have during high school. She’s also great for college advice, and loves giving students help with internship applications.
Printz shared, “An opportunity like this [working in a field where the student hopes to pursue a career] prepares them for what they will experience everyday and they can see first hand if it is something they want to do. Apprenticeships are a great way to do this also.”
Oakdale also has classes focused on career and job readiness, such as work study opportunities and a career research and development class.
Resumes are another big part of the job-application process. Many students wonder what to put on a resume if they have never had a job. Some good things to put on a student resume are participation in academic programs, such as CTC, AFA, or the Leadership Academy. If you speak a language other than English, and speak it well, that can also be added. GPA and extracurricular activities can be put on your resume as well.
An often overlooked but incredibly important aspect of earning a job, for students and adults, is scheduling an interview and getting in contact with the manager or owner of the business. “Take initiative! Call places, email more than once, show your enthusiasm!” Rosie Bonbrest, an Oakdale High School junior and a receptionist at Structures Salon and Spa, advised.
No business is looking to hire someone who seems disinterested or unmotivated, so put your best foot forward by demonstrating how well you would do in a position if given the opportunity.
