This year, Board of Education member Jason Johnson is running for Congress as the only independent runner for his district (District 6). As an independent, he wants to support schools and their students and work on state and national issues.
“I have chosen to be an Independent because I believe in non-partisan, service-focused leadership. I want to focus on collaborative solutions that benefit our community without being tied to a specific party agenda,” Johnson explained.
Independent runners must get 6,000 signatures to be put on the ballet. Johnson is currently collecting signatures, although he stated that their campaign signature count is increasing everyday. He’s secured the minimum amount, still working to get additional signatures.
Senior at Oakdale High School and future voter in the 2024 congressional election McKenzia Mollica voiced her opinion about Johnson running for Congress: “It would be great to see him be able to pursue his goals and do what he hopes to get done.”
Johnson’s background includes his bachelor’s degree in biology and his minor in chemistry. He was a science teacher at Thurmont Middle School. He was Elected for Board of Education during the COVID lockdown in November of 2020, meaning his four-year term is coming to an end. Johnson’s experiences from his education and his teaching helps him better understand citizens who are concerned about education in schools, as well as support students, staff, and families.
Johnson will always remember Frederick’s community and what he has done to help it, “[It was] an exciting opportunity to amplify my ability to serve. While I will miss my time in education, I am eager to bring my passion for serving the community to a broader platform.” Johnson addressed.
