Another social media phenomenon spreads as teens try to get their five seconds of fame through a couple thousand favorites and retweets on Twitter has made its way into the homes of millions. No more cinnamon challenge (where someone would attempt to keep a spoonful of cinnamon in their mouth for a certain amount of time) or salt and ice challenge (where salt is sprinkled on the skin followed by pressing an ice cube into the patch and holding for a few seconds). Nowadays it’s the Kylie Jenner lip challenge.
It’s no secret that Kylie Jenner is from an extremely wealthy family and she “wrote” a book with her sister, Kendall. Because of using lip fillers to plump her lips, it has become a worldwide trend/joke that Kylie has gained this enhancement to her lips by sucking a glass bottle or jar. This may sound harmless, and it is if you only do it for a few seconds, but the challenge is to hold it until your blood vessels burst, leaving your lips dangerously swollen and bruised.
“Not only can significant pain, swelling, and bruising result from these suction techniques, but there is potential risk for scarring and permanent disfigurement with repeated attempts,” said dermatologic surgeon Dendy Engelman about the dangers of this social media trend.
Sounds like a great idea. Let’s all just permanently damage our lips for just a few thousand retweets. It doesn’t change anything. You’re still incredibly unknown, you won’t gain new followers. There is literally nothing to gain from doing this. Some people might find it funny, but most just roll their eyes at the immaturity and stupidity of the whole ordeal.
“I think it’s ridiculous and people are stupid for taking the risk of permanent damage,” said Senior Anna Jones.
So, before you attempt this, think about whether or not you want to explain to people that you were out of touch for a few days because you were getting plastic surgery on your lips since you thought it would be a grand idea to do the Kylie Jenner lip challenge. What a great story to tell.
