Tech Company Meta, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, is currently under a lawsuit by 33 states so far. The lawsuit is Meta allegedly using psychologically manipulative tactics on their social media platforms meant to target children.
WIth Meta under a lawsuit, they are currently also under threat for violating the “Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.” These ‘manipulative’ tactics can draw children in and keep them hooked so they spend hours on these platforms.
When asked about the lawsuit, Junior Marley Bahen claimed, “I think that it’s fair to sue, because while it isn’t exactly a criminal offense, it is something that can help a risk for future generations.”
So how will this lawsuit end? The states’ goal is to end the manipulation of children on these sites, but it could also be a limitation on children as a whole to protect children’s safety.
Social Media is a place where it can be very negative as Bahen explained, “I think we should limit social media use to a certain extent, like having restrictions on different age groups or by removing harmful or negative posts or users having stricter and limited amounts of time allowed on a platform.”
Limitation of these sites could lead to safer internet usage for children and also include body image. Body image is highly affected by media and the unsafe body standards displayed on these platforms could lead to a poor self body image, eating disorders, and body dysmorphia.
Online scams are all over websites like Meta, subjecting children who might not know better could leave them prone to identity theft or having their personal information being stolen.
This Meta suit is a strong step towards safety online, especially for children. With 33 states and 41 attorney generals working on this case, it’s safe to say that it’s a very large one.
