On September 22nd 2023, during 4th block, the first Freshman Club meeting of the year was held. The meeting covered what Freshman Club is about, what the members will be doing, and what it can help with and lead to.
Dr. Ed Schoder, an English teacher at the school, committed to being the advisor of the Freshman Club. According to Schoder, “When the school opened there were 30 faculty members, which were pretty involved.” W ith that being said, there is already a sense of community, even without the club fully starting yet.
The club’s activities include community service, school posters and projects. Sometimes they will even go to basketball games to cheer on the team and help with anything they need. Schoder exclaims, “Freshman club is basically about building community amongst freshmen that want to join. We are right now working on our Homecoming mural, which is one of the many activities.”
Schoder mentioned during the meeting that he was the advisor of the National Honors Society, which really opened up doors for a lot of freshmen. With these new opportunities, it enables students to get their volunteer hours before junior year.
Oakdale Freshman Makenna Hunter stated: “I joined because I felt like the environment was just nurturing, and really good for me, also Dr. Schoder is the [National] Honors Society [advisor] and I really want to join, and the Freshman Club will help. I hope it’ll help me get in.” Hunter is just one of the many students who were interested in the Honors Society.
The students meet once a month during 4th block. The students in the club are currently working on the Homecoming poster that will be up during Homecoming on Saturday, October 7th.
The Freshman Club is here to help freshmen get acclimated to the high school and to cultivate a sense of bond and community. Each member of the club felt that it was a nurturing and helpful club that they are extremely excited to grow in!
