The Trends That Need To Be Left in 2023

Students scroll through TikTok to catch up on all of the new trends.

Students scroll through TikTok to catch up on all of the new trends.

There are many popular trends that came out in 2023 that had people questioning. They were either loved or hated. Trends are created out of the blue, spread by “influencers”, and then become popular. All of this is through social media, like TikTok.

TikTok is an addictive, captivating app. There are endless amounts of videos, which allow users to scroll for hours at a time. People are considered “influencers” once they have lots of users watching their videos or once they obtain a decent following.  They start posting random ideas in hope that they catch on, and then can become popular and “trending”. The amount of random trends is getting out of hand. They can range from clothing styles, makeup looks, popular foods, to words, phrases, and actions. Many of these should be left in 2023 and not continue into 2024.

Some popular clothing styles of 2023 had many controversial opinions. A main one was the “low rise” jeans. People say that trend should stay in the early 2000’s. Another is blazer coats over everything. Many people in 2023 have worn professional looking blazers over a variety of outfits. They wore them over everyday street clothes, professional outfits, even over workout clothes.

Another trend to leave in the past year? Sophomore Grace Robinson shares that she thinks “Utah Curls gotta go”. The Utah Curls can best be described as curling your hair but leaving two to three inches at the bottom straight. Robinson says, “It just looks lazy, and like girls didn’t want to finish curling their hair.”

A popular word that needs to stop being said in 2024 is “slay”. Senior Tori Taylor explains that this word was “extremely overused and way too repetitive”. It was spread on TikTok with popular “influencers” saying it to hype others up.

A disputed action that receives mixed opinions is posting a picture of the sunset everyday. Senior Gabe Long strongly believes posting every sunset needs to stop. He expresses, “I can understand once a year or something on Instagram, but having a Snapchat story for sunsets is insane.”

So many more trends in 2023 had mixed reviews. The “clean girl” makeup look, the overuse of bows, and the need to buy every product that has been posted.

Last year’s trends should stay in last year. Everything popular is getting excessive and unnecessary. 2024 should be a new year and a fresh start with different trends.
