The Oakdale golf team is undefeated and went all the way to States! After finishing second at both FCPS and CMC Championship matches, the Bears qualified for the MPSSAA Golf State Champions. The matches took place October 23 and 25. This year, the sophomores that lead the Bears are Zac Taylor and Ty Yuhas.
Taylor has been playing golf for a majority of his life, starting at just three years old. He has been competing in the sport for the past three years. Not only does Taylor play golf, but he is also a competitive swimmer and plays baseball. He has been on the Oakdale golf team for two years now and states his favorite thing was the team bonding and the fun things the team does together.
All of Taylor’s teammates are also in his friend group: “It kind of just meshed really well.”
He says that because the guys are all so close, it makes playing together easy and shows one of their team’s biggest strengths, comradery: “The team bonding we do a lot of fun stuff with the team but also just being out there and competing.”
Taylor says that one of the team’s weaknesses this season was their short game, but because they have been busy practicing, it has improved extremely. He is excited to compete in States and has been out on the golf course, practicing everyday.
Yuhas has been on the school’s team, competing for the past two years. Before joining the school’s team, he played golf for fun. He joined the school’s team because his brother did it and it appeared fun. Like Taylor, Yuhas is a multisport athlete who also participates in hockey and lacrosse.
His favorite thing about the sport is always having the opportunity to play with your friends. Yuhas says everyone on the team likes each other, which makes playing together easier.
He expresses how one of his and the team’s weaknesses this season was their mentality. If they were having a bad round one day, it would be harder to pull themselves out of the slump. Similar to Taylor, Yuhas has been practicing for states by going to the course they will be competing at.
While they didn’t make it to the final rounds, we’re still proud of them! Congrats on a successful season.
