Oakdale Athletics Programs of the Decade for FCPS
January 23, 2020
Oakdale High School was founded in 2010, and since then the athletic program has been extremely successful. All the other high schools in Frederick have been around for a long time, such as Frederick High School, which was built in 1891.
Oakdale was crowned program of the decade for these sports: Volleyball, Boys Basketball, Girls Lacrosse, Boys Indoor Track and Field, Boys Track and Field, and Boys swimming. All of which experienced some great success throughout the past decade.
To start off, Oakdale Volleyball was a very successful program only 4 years in, winning the 2A state title in 2014 and then winning it again in 2017. The ladies were also the first volleyball team in Frederick County history to ever win the state championship.
Next is the Boys’ Basketball team. The Oakdale boys’ basketball team was very successful this past decade as well, also reaching the state final after only 4 years, and reaching the state`semi finals in 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2019. Credit is due to the former head coach, Terry Connolly, who started the program. He brought all the success, besides the 2019 season.
A star was also made during the Boys basketball decade in Zach Thomas. Thomas was one of the best basketball players Frederick county has seen and probably will ever see. He is the only player to reach 2,000 points in Oakdale history.
Girls Lacrosse was a powerhouse throughout the decade. The girls made the state final for 2A in 2014 and 2016, and the state semi-finals in 2017. The girls were the only team in Frederick County to make it to the state final four for a total of 3 times. Nearly every season the girls played they went undefeated and kept their record over double digits each season.
Boys indoor track and field was one of the most powerful teams in recent years, under head coach Dave Lillard. The boys won state championships in 2015 and 2019, but came in the top two for the state in 2016 and 2017 as well. Oakdale won the countywide meet in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
Boys outdoor track and field was also named program of the decade. Oakdale luckily turned it around in the later years of the decade, and started dominating in Frederick County. They were state runner ups in 2016 and 2017, then state champions in 2018 and 2019. The boys are also the reigning champion of the Frederick meet.
Boys swimming was also one of the most dominant swim programs the county has seen in a long time. The boys were a force to be reckoned with in Frederick County, winning 6 consecutive county championships and another one in 2012, totaling up to 7 county championships in the past decade, and only losing one, yes one, meet in 6 years. The boys swimming team was a team that struck fear into their opponents every time they competed. No other team has ever won so many consecutive since the championships started in 1983.
Even though the boys soccer team did not win the program of the decade, they deserve a piece. They won 3 state finals, in 2014, 2015 and then in 2018. They also made the state semifinals in 2019. The boys soccer team has had some success in the past decade, coming up short to Urbana for crown of program of the decade.
Oakdale is one of the best academic and athletic school in Frederick county, only being a school for 10 years. This new decade should be some of the same from these programs.
