On February 24th at the University of Maryland, Oakdale High School competed in the State swim championships after winning many county preliminaries as well as regional championships. This year the Bears brought home amazing results with their performance.
“Our lads won the championship with grit, determination, dedication, and a wee bit of luck,” Coach Damon Allen states. “It is an honor and a privilege to be able to compete at states, see friends from other teams and to swim against some of the fastest swimmers in the State.”
“Unlike regular dual meets and county competitions, the swimmers going to States had to focus intensely on specific events, refining their stroke mechanisms, techniques, forms, endurance, and speed. The emphasis on starts, turns, and finishes added another layer of preparation for the challenging competition ahead,” shared Allen, highlighting the team’s defining moment.
The motto “Together, Everyone Achieves More,” became the cornerstone of their victories. Notably during the dual meet against Urbana, both teams tied in the 200 free relay, electrified the atmosphere, and set the stage for the county championship.
The season saw nine swimmers breaking multiple team and county records, solidifying their place in Oakdale’s swimming history.
Damon’s advice for the athletes was simple yet profound: Set goals, work hard, swim often, and conquer those goals.” Regardless of external conditions, putting forth the best effort and enjoying the journey were key aspects of his guidance.
A special message from Coach Damon for the fans and supporters read: “Keep cheering us on; the more you cheer, the more electrifying the atmosphere becomes, and the more thrilling it is for our swimmers!”
Freshman Darya Tarlan, one of the swimmers that made it to States, expressed the incredible honor it was to represent Oakdale. For Tarlan, it was not just about personal achievement but also carrying the pride of her school. The mix of excitement, nervousness, and determination fueled her drive to deliver the best performance.
“The post-meet trips to McDonald’s [were my memorable moments],” Tarlan exclaims.
Mentally preparing for challenging meets like states involved visualization, focusing on strengths, and maintaining a positive mindset. Tarlan credited the support of coaches and teammates as crucial elements in boosting her confidence.
As the team geared up for States, Tarlan’s individual and team goals were undoubtedly set high. A message was extended to teammates and supporters: “Compete with passion, and the Oakdale community’s unwavering support would be the driving force.”
Being on the swim team, according to Tarlan, had a profound impact on her high school experience. Beyond improving physical fitness, the team provided a sense of community, teamwork, and valuable life lessons about perseverance and sportsmanship.
As the team’s season came to an end, Oakdale’s swimmers, guided by coach Damon and others, should be very proud of this season’s victories and pass those goals onto the next season.
