Entertainment industries over the past few years may think that past products need a new coat of paint. The big companies such as Nintendo, Square Enix, Disney, Bethesda have manufactured many new reboots and remakes of video games and movies. Audiences admire remakes when they are announced; following the new adaptation of Final Fantasy 7, players went crazy over the release of remakes like The Lion King and DOOM.

Bethesda Softworks is a video game company that mainly makes action video games.  Most titles people would know are The Elder Scrolls, Fallout series, Wolfenstein, and DOOM. Mr. Mark Widmeyer, a math teacher in Oakdale, expresses his opinion on the advancements of technology: “I think technology has progressed enough so that even a classic PC game, like DOOM, could benefit from improved graphics and updated gameplay. Plus, I think the nostalgia and familiarity of the game means that the creators have an instant audience who will pay for their product.”

Alex Gang, a junior in Oakdale, has this to say about the DOOM series and its reboot: “ It’s a well known game that was brought down because of bad graphics, so rebooting the graphics will greatly improve the game.”

Gang has a rising YouTube career called I.C. Movies, where he reviews and rates movies he goes to the theater to see. Gang has over 183 subscribers on his Youtube channel.

Gang was asked what the best film remake he had seen was and this was his reply “The 2002 film adaptation of the 1975 stage musical Chicago, it was the same story, but changed its stage specific elements and replaced it with film specific elements. I think it’s the best movie ever made.”

The original animated Lion King was beloved by many people but when Disney decided to make a live action remake of The Lion King not as many people liked it because they took away all the things that made the original so beloved. This includes the voice actors, the iconic songs, and the animated expressions of the characters. The original Lion King received 93% on Rotten Tomatoes while The Lion King remake only received 53%.

The animated Lion King in 1994 had a budget of $79.3 million dollars while the live action remake of The Lion King had a budget of $260 million dollars. The reviews from critics all say that the original Lion King was surprisingly serious and think that it’s a good thing that the movie deals with real issues. While the critic reviews for the remake of The Lion King all say that it was Joyless, Artless and maybe soulless they even called the movie a star-studded Disney Nature film.

The original animated Lion King made over $950 million dollars worldwide while The Lion King remake brought in about $1.7 billion dollars worldwide.

The original Final Fantasy 7 is an Role-playing game that was released on January 31, 1997. It is regarded as the best game in the series. When the remake of Final Fantasy 7 was announced the fans of the series were ecstatic because they wanted this for a long time and it seems like the remake is going to be even better than the original.

One of the critic reviews from Metacritic about Final Fantasy 7 is all positive saying that the game was the RPG people were waiting for, and praising the game as a whole.

Resident Evil is a horror game series where the player is trapped in an enclosed space with monsters crawling all over the place. Senior David Klos had this to say about the Resident Evil remakes: “RE 2 & 3 are two of the most notable games in the series. Like DOOM, the rendering of graphics and a similar audience  caused a spike in popularity for original players and newcomers alike.”

The general public finds most video game remakes successful, while they dislike movie remakes. This can be attributed to a number of reasons, but the main reason being, they take away the emotion from the original.
