Holiday Classic Now Deemed “Offensive”

Brendan Ricucci

In today’s time people are definitely not afraid to speak their minds. If people find something offensive they will call it out. Most recently the famous movie from 1964 “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” was called out for being offensive.

The issue started when the Huffington Post tweeted, “The holiday TV classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is seriously problematic.”

The company also shared some tweets from other Twitter users on why the movie is considered offensive.

One example of offensive content the Huffpost mentioned is when the School Coach Reindeer encourages the bullying on Rudolph’s red nose. The School Coach explains how because of Rudolph’s red nose he shouldn’t be allowed to participate in any reindeer games. Another example is when Donner forbids his wife from joining the search for their son, he states, “No, This is man’s work.”

A 54 year old classic Christmas movie now deemed racist, sexist, and homophobic.

Junior Liam Rorer addressed the issue if the Huffpost was addressing an issue they truly deemed serious or if they posted it for attention. Rorer replied,  “ Yes I think they’re running out of ideas and they need to understand the movie’s age and the American guidelines back then and respect them more then ridicule them.”

Users agreed and disagreed with the tweet but the most standout tweet was when Donald Trump Jr. responded to the Huffpost tweet by stating, “Liberalism is a disease.”  Tweeting this now brings politics into this movie argument.

Junior Brock Layden expressed if he thought it was ok for Trump Jr. to tweet this. Layden responded, “Yes if Trump Jr. feels politics should be involved he has the right to bring it up, if the Huffpost has a voice why can’t he.”

A Christmas classic from 1964 now deemed offensive. The real question today, is this movie offensive or was it just normal for its time as Liam Rorer stated.
