Good Morning. Today, Mrs. Polce and I are going to talk about registering for classes for next year. At this point in time, you should have received a registration sheet for your grade and an attached course summary sheet.

We are first going to look at Graduation requirements which are listed in the FCPS High School Planning Guide. You can view the planning guide online at www.fcps.org.

Students must complete 25 credits in order to graduate. These credits include 4 credits of English, 3 Social Studies Credits, 4 Math Credits-you must take a math every year of high school., 3 Science Credits, 1 credit of Technology, 1 credit of fine arts, .5 credit of Health, .5 of Fitness for Life and one half credit of financial literacy before you graduate.

You must also choose and follow one of these three completer programs, which can be found in the guide, to help you prepare for further study or a career.

1. The University System of Maryland Completer- which includes 1 credit in Mathematics at the Algebra 2 level or beyond and 2 credits in the same World Language.
2. The Advanced Technology Completer which includes-2 credits in the same area (we currently offer pre-engineering technology and architectural engineering and design which will fulfill this completer.
3. The Career and Technology Completer- which includes the required number of credits in an approved CTE Completer program either offered at the Career and Technology Center or here at OHS.

If you are interested in a program at the Career and Technology Center (CTC) you will need to see your counselor to arrange a shadow by the middle of February. For those students who have already visited the Center this year, applications are available online or in the counseling office and will need to be turned in to the counseling office by March 4th. Please see your counselor for further information.

Now we are going to look at and review your registration sheet.

The registration sheet is different for each grade level. If you are a current freshman your sheet is orange. If you are a current sophomore your sheet is green. If you are a current junior your sheet is blue. The sheet lists specific registration instructions for your grade on the back.

We have already discussed career pathways, so please look at your academic courses. Please notice that current freshmen and sophomores should register for an English, Social Studies, Math and Science course.

Electives-please use the attached course offering sheet to enter the name and number of the course you would like to take. Please note that some courses are year long and that some courses are specific to grade level.

Please remember that when filling out your registration sheet you must complete the alternates’ section. By doing so you will have control of what classes you will be entered in if you are unable to get the courses you sign up for first in the electives section.

You will notice a Virtual In School (VIS) section on your registration sheet this year. This is a possible option for OHS students next year. Students learn using web-based courses through the internet. Students must be organized, persistent, goal-oriented, self-motivated, and enjoy taking responsibility for their own learning. Please see the list of possible VIS offerings on the attached elective sheet under the subject area.

Attention Current Sophomores: You will notice a section on your sheet titled Work Based Learning. If you are interested in being a student service learner, being an intern, or participating in an apprenticeship, please check the appropriate box. You will then be invited to a meeting this Spring to discuss these scheduling options.

Attention Current Juniors: You will notice a section on your sheet titled Work Based Learning. If you are interested in being a student service learner, being an intern or participating in an apprenticeship, or participating in work study, please check the appropriate box. Please also indicate if you are interested in dual enrollment through Frederick Community College. You will then be invited to a meeting this Spring to discuss these scheduling options.

You must still select eight courses and then your schedule will be changed, once you have been approved for one of the above-mentioned programs.

We encourage you to select a wide variety of challenging courses to help you prepare for life after high school. Take advantage of the various opportunities offered at Oakdale in academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities.

We urge you to choose your courses carefully; staffing decisions are based upon selections students make now, so give thought to your choices. It is possible that classes may not be offered if there is a lack of initial student interest.

You must turn in your completed registration sheet to your SET teacher no later than Friday, February 7th.
