How to Keep and Achieve a New Year’s Resolution.

While a majority of new gym memberships occur in January, four out of five of these people quit within the next few months.

With the start of 2024, many individuals’ new year’s resolutions are in full swing. However, by the end of the first week of January, 23% of people quit, and by the end of the month that percentage increases to 43%. At the end of the year only 9% of Americans will complete their resolutions. But with so many people failing, what makes these people successful?

In order to be successful, it’s important to know why people give up. Sophomore Anna Lyons believes that people fail “because they forget about it or just stop caring after a while.” While Lyons tries to keep resolutions, she often tends to forget about them within a couple of months.

According to an article from ABC, a majority of people tend to not put enough thought or realism into their resolutions. They have high ambitions, but no way to truly achieve them. This then leads to a large loss in motivation, and eventually people give up on their resolutions.

This leaves one major question, how do people avoid these issues?

Besides being realistic with both themselves and their expectations, one way individuals can be successful with their news resolutions is tracking their progress. Studies have found that those who set up ways to hold themselves accountable when setting goals are twice as likely to complete them.

Freshmen Verah Jang mentioned one way individuals can hold themselves accountable. She claims people should: ”post your resolutions somewhere you can see it everyday, so you know what you’re working towards.”

In the end, a majority of people are going to fail at their New year’s resolutions. However, with a little extra effort and motivation, a few more will be successful this year. There are plenty of ways to complete these goals, people just have to put in the effort.
