Stranger Things 2

Stranger Things 2

Grace Sagel, Writer

Stranger Things, a sci-fi series based on the 1980’s, is currently one of the most binge-worthy shows on Netflix. The setting is in Hawkins, Indiana, a fictional town in the middle of nowhere. The show connects its audience through its quirky yet relatable characters, all played by outstanding actors. The main characters are Will, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Nancy, Jonathan, and the telekinetic little girl named Eleven. As the series progressed, fans grew attached to these kids, becoming emotionally invested in them and their pursuit to rescue Will from the Upside Down, a different dimension, and the mystical creature known as the Demogorgon.

Season 1 focused in on the disappearance of Will Byers and the consequent search by his friends, family, and Jim Hopper, the town’s sheriff. On their quest, they uncovered secret experiments that were taking place in Hawkins Lab, supernatural forces, and Eleven, a bizarre girl with superhuman abilities.

The return of Eleven reassures viewers that their many questions from the season one finale will be answered, and all loose ends will be tied. However, this is not the case as Season 2 introduces a deeper understanding of the Upside Down. Although the new season answers some of our questions like, “What happened to Eleven?”, “Is Will okay?”, and “Why did Jim Hopper get into the government car?”, the audience is left wondering what the Mind Flayer, a shadow monster from the Upside Down, will do next.

The new characters, Max, Billy, Bob Newby, and Eleven’s sister play important roles in the show; they help rescue Will, serve as new friends and family, and strategize against the Mind Flayer. Sarah Long, a senior at Oakdale, is a huge fan of Stranger Things. As soon as the second season came out, she got to watching it right away. She felt that the new characters were annoying because Max and her brother caused more problems in the group, like harming Steve, making Eleven mad, and coming in between Lucas and Dustin’s friendship.

Long did appreciate the episode in which Eleven met her long lost sister, because her sister channeled Eleven’s inner power and helped her to be stronger.

Despite the conflict that arose in the new season, Long enjoyed Mike and Eleven’s reunion and was glad that it was saved for the very end.

Stranger Things is thrilling, twisted, humorous and atmospheric; if you are into sci-fi, action, and horror, this is absolutely the show for you. From discovering a dark and swampy alternate dimension and searching for Will in season 1, to fighting off the Mind Flayer, the virus that took over Will’s body, in season 2, the show just keeps getting bigger and better.
